Clean House

Keep your home clean and smelling naturally fresh without using traditional cleaning products that are loaded with chemicals and artificial fragrances.

  • Make your own DIY cleaning products with simple ingredients like lemon, vinegar, water, essential oils and vodka (which is great on floors!)

  • Use houseplants to naturally purify the air and add a touch of green to your living spaces.

  • Open windows regularly to let fresh air circulate throughout your home.

  • Consider using natural air fresheners like an essential oil diffuser or simmering herbs or citrus peels on the stove.

  • Use washable, fitted pads instead of disposable swiffer cloths when cleaning your floors.

  • Or use one of the many, natural lines that come with refillable bottles. I am a huge fan of Blueland  for household sprays and Clean People for laundry.

I often check out products to see how “clean” they are before I buy them on the EWG Healthy Living app .  Read more about what ingredients you want to avoid and why here.

Make your own household cleaner

Spray bottle (preferably glass)

Small funnel

1/2 cup white vinegar

2 tablespoons baking soda

Tea tree essential oil

Eucalyptus essential oil

Any extra essential oils (lemon, orange, rosemary...have fun creating your own signature scent!)

Instructions:

Using the funnel, pour in 1/2 cup of white vinegar into a spray bottle.

Add 2 tablespoons of baking soda, and wait for the foaming to subside.

Add in 10 drops of essential oils (or a little more for extra fragrance).

Fill the rest of the bottle with water.

Screw the spray top onto the bottle, and shake well before use.

Vodka - it’s not just for drinking!

Yes, that’s right - you can clean and disinfect with vodka.  Grab the cheapest stuff and let it work its magic.

  • Disinfect the mattress: All you need is straight vodka for this job. Remove the sheets, pour a shot or two of vodka into a spray bottle and spray the mattress. This is great to do in the guest room between visits from house guests, or on your own mattress about every three months.

  • Floors that sparkle: Combine 1 part vodka with 4 parts water and add a little scented dishwashing liquid.  This mixture not only leaves your floors clean, it also dries very quickly. I spray it directly on the floor and  mop up with a reusable mop pad on a swiffer mop.
