Don’t Fall Behind

Staying Connected and Energized is Key

It’s that dreaded time of year when we turn our clocks back.  While the days may feel a bit shorter and darker, you don’t have to let that dim your light. Start making some plans and forming some habits now to ensure you don’t start hibernating until Spring.

You may have to get a little creative or out of your comfort zone, but if you schedule some dates, book some classes and regularly get outside, you will keep your energy level and mood up.  Start now to set yourself up for later and you will be feeling full of life even in the dead of the winter.

Here are some great ways to stay connected (and off the sofa):

  1. Make fresh air and a little sun a priority - even if you just bundle up and take a ten minute walk.  Chances are you will feel great being outside that you will continue on for longer. Schedule a set time with a friend, so you can’t push it off.

  2. Have you always wanted to learn a new skill?  Sign up for a class (ideally in person for some extra socialization) but online works too.  You could always invite a friend over to join you. Read about some great options for online classes here.

  3. When you wake up, open the blinds, take your coffee outside, possibly consider buying a seasonal light therapy lamp.  Just get as much of that natural daylight in as possible - it boosts your Serotonin, Vitamin D and regulates the release of Melatonin.

  4. Stay connected!  That can mean getting together for a walk, to play a game, grab coffee, volunteer somewhere or even just wandering around a bookstore or museum.  Just being out and around others is important.

  5. Play like you’re a kid!  Load up on some fun games, join an outdoor fitness class, paint, dance - whatever you need to do to feel like a kid again.  Dance and music are both little happy pills, so check out some live music playing in your area on this site.

  6. Be careful of what you’re putting in your fridge and the pantry.  If you don’t succumb to those cozy cravings now, you may find that your energy levels stay up and you’re not searching for those elastic waistbands this winter.  Load up on as many healthy and fresh options as possible.

  7. Buy some plants!  They provide good clean air, greenery and you will enjoy having to take care of them.

  8. Make a list of all the movies, shows, books and podcasts everyone has been suggesting and allow yourself some time to just chill and enjoy them, but maybe don’t binge them.

  9. Host some fun, but simple parties to bring a group together without too much fuss.  We recently shared a few fun ideas: Favorite Things Party, Clothing Swap, Virtual Wine Tasting.

  10. And if you really want to go for it, check out the Winter Arc Challenge.  It technically started in October, but it’s never too late to make some changes.

Enjoy that extra hour of sleep on Saturday night!
