The Gallery Wall

Don’t be Afraid of this Design Element

There’s no better way to showcase your personality, passions and personal style than a gallery wall. But for some reason, this design element frightens many amateur home designers - but not me! Here are some things that can help you make the perfect gallery wall in your home- these aren’t rules, merely some guidelines for you to consider when creating your gallery wall!

  1. Pick a color palette for the art and try to stay within it.

  2. Start with your biggest piece first and go from there.

  3. Try to keep three inches between pieces.

  4. Mix up horizontal and vertical, paintings and mirrors, different sizes.

  5. Use different kinds of frames and frame colors.

  6. Don’t be afraid to use personal pieces or homemade art.

  7. Make a template with craft paper before you start making holes in your walls!

Our Favorite Online Resources for Art

I have gotten my art from all over! Some are more expensive than others, some are framed, some are canvas, some are downloaded and then framed, some I’ve gotten while on vacation; be creative when sourcing your art! Here are some places that we love for art that are affordable but really cool:

  1. Etsy - there are countless shops from local artists that offer really wonderful art pieces. From large scale framed art to customized pieces that are digital downloads. Pro tip: send your downloads to FedEx to be printed to any size on professional paper.

  2. Anthropologie- if you favor a more bohemian style, this is your place. I’ve gotten many of my pieces here.

  3. Society6 -  they have everything you’d ever want, especially pop culture items or localized city art. I’ve gotten many things here for my sons’ apartments.

  4. Chairish - for unique finds. Love this site.

  5. Ebay- again, they have everything. Good for unique stuff.

  6. Or take a trip to your local antique or thrift shop for some unique finds and frames (you can always replace the art if it’s a great frame).

Tools for Making it Easier

  1. Craft paper for making your guide

  2. A good laser level, like this one.

  3. Frog tape to help mark out the walls without leaving a mark!

  4. Good picture hanging essentials.

But most importantly, have fun doing it! It’s such a personal design item that adds so much to your home.
